I am The National newspaper’s Deputy Foreign Editor in Abu Dhabi after serving as Assistant Foreign Editor. I was previously Newsweek Magazine‘s International Security and Terrorism Correspondent and, before that, a staff writer for the magazine. I have reported from the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America and South Asia.
Assignments have taken me to the aftermath of ISIS-claimed attacks in Nice and London—both the car-ramming and knife attacks on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge—as well as Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Sri Lanka and Nicaragua. I am HEAT-trained after participating in an intensive course on a special forces base in Jordan.
I have obtained exclusives on the Islamic State, its online operations (New York hit list), its battlefield tactics (Manbij letter—online and print), and the impact of the group’s reach outside the caliphate (Nice attack). On top of this, I have covered extremism more widely, reporting on Hamas, ultranationalist Jewish settlers, Al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Boko Haram.
As a staff writer focused on the Middle East for Newsweek, I secured exclusives that included arranging a deal with a Libyan smuggler to take two Sudanese migrants across the Mediterranean to Italy; the first interview with the co-pilot of the hijacked EgyptAir flight MS181 on his ordeal and Aylan Kurdi’s mother revealing her family’s destination in her final phone call.
Some of my interviews have included Turkey’s most prominent Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas, former ISIS hostage Daniel Rye on his captivity, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris about his refugee island proposal, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog ahead of the country’s 2015 election.
Opinion pieces I have obtained from influential figures include Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, both HDP co-chairs Figen Yuksekdag and Selahattin Demirtas, former Israeli and Iraqi ambassadors to the U.S. Michael Oren and Lukman Failly, PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat and wife of jailed Saudi blogger Raif Badawi.
I was highly commended for Digital Journalist of the Year at the Association of Online Publishers’ (AOP) Digital Publishing Awards in 2017. I was nominated for the same award in 2016.
